Terms of Service

Plain English, and short, because nobody reads the other kind. These are the terms you agree to by using TanStan.

What this app is

TanStan is a shared log for a dog’s day — what went in, what came out, and when the dog slept — kept by the people who live with that dog. It records what you tell it and states figures back to you. It is a notebook, not an authority.

What it is for

TanStan is built for one household keeping a log about its own dog, for that household’s own reading. A household is the few people who live with the dog or look after it day to day — up to eight — and the log is theirs. It is not built for, and may not be used by, a business logging animals it does not live with: a kennel, a daycare, a breeder, a shelter, a walker, a groomer or a clinic. It is not a medical record, a veterinary tool or a monitoring device, and it is not for keeping a log about a person. Used for something it was not built for, it will not fit, and nothing here promises that it will.

It is not veterinary advice

Nothing in this app is advice about your dog’s health, and the app is built not to give any: it never says a number is good, bad, normal, high or low, and it does not compare your dog to any breed standard or growth chart. If something about your dog worries you, ask a vet. Do not delay doing so because a figure in here looked ordinary.

Your account

You need an account, and you must be old enough to agree to these terms where you live. One account is one person: do not share it, and do not hand it to somebody outside your household. Keep your password to yourself — anyone who can sign in as you can read and change everything your household has logged. You are responsible for what is done from your account.

Your household

A household is shared by design. Everyone in yours can read, edit and delete everything logged about your dog, including things you wrote. An invite code hands somebody that access, so give one out with the same care you would give a house key. Whoever set the household up is its admin. The admin can remove a member, switch AI access off for the whole household, and delete the dog’s profile along with everything logged about it. If the admin’s account is deleted, the longest-standing remaining member becomes the admin. Removing somebody takes their access away; it does not remove what they logged, because the log is the household’s rather than any one person’s.

What you write stays yours

Your log, your notes and your photos belong to you. Upload only what is yours to upload. You give permission to store them and show them to the people in your household, which is what makes a shared log work, and to nothing else. They are not used to train anything, not sold, and not shown to anybody outside your household. If you connect an AI of your own, what it reads it reads on your account with that service, under that service’s terms, not these.

What you may not do

Do not use the app to break the law, or to log anything about a person without their agreement. Do not try to reach another household’s data, guess at invite codes, or get around the subscription, the eight-member limit or any other limit the app sets. Do not attack, overload, copy or reverse-engineer the service, and do not read the log by any automated means other than the AI connector on your own account. Do not sell, rent or pass on access, and do not build another product or service on top of this one. Access can be withdrawn if you do.

Payment

TanStan is a subscription, one per household: whoever creates the household subscribes through Apple, and everyone who joins it shares that subscription at no extra cost. The first 7 days are free; cancel before they end and nothing is billed. It renews automatically until you cancel, which you can do anytime in your Apple account settings — access continues to the end of whatever period was paid for, and there are no partial refunds from us. Billing, refunds and the free trial are handled by Apple under Apple’s terms. If a subscription ends, everything you logged stays readable and exportable; only adding to the log waits for a subscription. Deleting your account does not cancel the subscription — Apple keeps renewing what it was told to renew. Cancel it in your Apple account settings first.

No promises about uptime

This is provided as it is. It is a small app with one developer and no on-call rota: it can be unavailable, it can lose an unsynced write, and it can be discontinued, with as much notice as circumstances allow. Keep anything you cannot afford to lose somewhere else as well — Export your data, in Settings, writes the whole log to files you keep. To the extent the law allows, there is no liability for loss arising from using it, and any liability that cannot be excluded is limited to what you have paid.

Apple

TanStan comes to you through Apple’s App Store, and these terms are between you and Ryan Schiller, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to maintain or support the app and is not responsible for it, for these terms, or for any claim about it — that it is faulty, that it infringes somebody’s rights, or that it fails a legal requirement — beyond refunding the price where Apple’s own terms say so. Apple may enforce these terms against you as a beneficiary of them. You must not be in a country under a United States embargo or on a United States list of prohibited parties.

Ending it

You can delete your account from Settings, under Your account, at any time. If somebody else is in your household, the shared history stays for them; if you are the only member, the household and its data are deleted with you. Access can also be withdrawn, for one person or a household, if these terms are broken.

Changes

These terms can change. When they do, the date at the top of this page changes with them and the change is listed under Latest updates. Continuing to use the app after that is how you accept the new version.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States. Any dispute is brought in the state or federal courts in New York County.
